Health Exchange Resource Guide

At Augusta Health, we know that there is still much confusion regarding the Affordable Care Act and the insurance options (Health Exchanges). We are providing this information to guide people to the resources that are available for information and assistance in filling out applications.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 allows uninsured and eligible Americans to gain access to affordable health care. On October 1, 2013, health insurance options were made available to the American public as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This is a federally run program where individuals can compare and shop for private health insurance plans as well as determine their eligibility for tax credits to help pay for coverage for eligible individuals.

Federal Information and Assistance

The Federal Health Insurance Marketplace provides key features of the Health Exchanges, answers common questions, allows people to shop for health insurance and compare private plans and will help people determine if they qualify for federal subsidies to help with the cost of insurance.

Virginia Information and Assistance

Virginia Health Exchanges, Medicaid, Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS), Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) programs are all part of Virginia's insurance affordability programs. The Affordable Care Act requires a single application for determination of eligibility.

There are a number of local resources that can help with information on eligibility and completing the application. People who have received special training to help consumers with information and the application process are called Navigators or Certified Application Counselors (CACs).
